“Local orthopedic team helps Haitians recover: Bloomington specialists spend 2 weeks treating people hurt in quake”

By Dann Denny

3/25/2010

During his two weeks’ worth of relief work outside the St. Damien Hospital in Tabarre, Haiti, Bloomington orthopedic surgeon Mark Hansen gave up most of the comforts of home.

He, along with three other Bloomington health providers — occupational therapist Kevin Kathman, registered nurse Lori Andersen and anesthesiologist David Willian — slept in tents perched atop a dormitory roof. […]

Bloomington Salvation Army officer in Haiti

Lt. Jonathan Fitzgerald of Bloomington has been serving with the Salvation Army in Haiti since February 12. He has primarily been overseeing food and supplies distribution for a temporary settlement of 20,000 in a soccer stadium in Port-au-Prince.

He recently traveled to Fond des Nègres, a 4-hour, 75-mile trip from the capital city, to deliver supplies for the Salvation Army’s Bethel Clinic, a medical facility providing 24-hour emergency care, pre- and post-natal care, an on-site laboratory and pharmacy, and a mobile clinic serving people displaced by January’s earthquake.

On the Menu: 10th St Market to carry Caribbean items

If you’re looking for produce or prepared foods from the West Indies, a good place to start is the 10th Street Market in Bloomington, near 10th and Union. They regularly carry items like ackee, callalloo, eddoes (malanga), kabocha squash, and other fresh and packaged foods from the region.

The owners of the 10th Street Market have recently agreed to check their suppliers for harder-to-find Caribbean foods, like breadfruit, Haitian coffee, culantro, scotch bonnet peppers, Matouk’s jam and kuchela, and Goya frozen fruit pulp.

If you have any special requests, send an email to bloomington4haiti@gmail.com, or contact the 10th Street Market directly. The greater the demand, the better the supply will be!

Radio show online; Haitian music coming to TD’s

At long last… our February 7 Haiti radio show on WFHB is now online! See the “In the Media” page to download or stream the audio file. The track list from the show is available in an earlier post on this blog; just search for “track list” in the search box to the right.

TD’s CDs and LPs in Bloomington has cleared space on their shelves to bring in music from Haiti. We’ve given them a long list of our favorite Haitian and Haitian-American artists representing several styles of music, including all the artists featured on the radio show.

Let them know you’re interested in music from Haiti and they’ll keep ordering more! They’ll also happily special-order your favorite albums.

We are very excited to hear scripture readings and prayers in NINETEEN different languages. The program is a community event in which we ask international people to read scripture and pray in their own native language. This will not only give the opportunity to the internationals to know that we care for their countries and ask for peace for their nations, but will give locals, from different churches and organizations the opportunity to gather together to pray for these nations. After finishing the readings and prayers in the auditorium, we will have 19 different stations in the building each representing a nation. People will go through these stations and pray for those specific nations. We will have some information about Christians and their conditions in that country.

Countries represented include: Brazil, Burma, China, Ecuador, Ghana, HAITI (Acts 17:26-28); Israel, Kenya, Korea, Malaysia (John 3:16-17); Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, Nigeria (Matthew 12:18-21); Palestine, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam (Psalm 95:6-7).
